Davina Jackson has hit 60 and having recently downsized from their family home, she and husband Al have even got some spare cash to set up a new lifestyle. Life isn't simple for Al and Davina Jackson. Their 30 year old son Orlando refuses to acknowledge adulthood while Davina's sister and brother-in-law intimidate them with their confident and controlled grasp on life. Hugo Blick's dark comedy starring Joanna Lumley and Denis Lawson looks at life through the eyes of a successful couple living in metropolitan London who struggle with sexual temptation, professional jealously and their fears for the future.

A chance meeting with an old school friend prompts Davina to reminisce about her childhood, and when her mother suffers another stroke, she returns to her old haunts. Meanwhile, Al also confronts his own past, in the guise of old flame and media grandee Sarah Thorne.

When world famous author Robert Ringwald flies in from America to judge a book prize he sets his cap at Davina and being a man used to getting what he wants, sets out to seduce her. Meanwhile, Al is trying to write an article on what makes a classic novel.

Roger fires his piano teacher for making eyes at his wife Veronica and Davina is shocked. She thinks he has only done it to show his more general contempt for artists so she employs a piano teacher to give lessons to Al.

Davina is worried that her brother-in-law, Roger, wants to have an affair with her. It is only after the unexpected arrival of Roger's son Michael, and the liberal use of a class C narcotic, that the true nature of Roger's desire is revealed.

Al is losing everything. First, it's his car radio, then it's his newspaper column, and finally it's his wife. But even after that, there is a still greater loss to come.
