Waterloo Road Comprehensive is on the scrap heap. Its despondent teachers have given up trying to make a difference as they struggle to cope with their own personal problems as well as their nightmare day jobs. When the current Headmaster has a nervous breakdown, Jack Rimmer (Jason Merrells) is thrown into the hot seat – very reluctantly. Jack is only too aware that Waterloo Road is at the bottom of the league tables and he’s under pressure to make an improvement – and fast.

Waterloo Road is set in a failing comprehensive school where the despondent teachers have given up trying to make a difference as they struggle to cope with their own personal problems as well as their nightmare day jobs. When the current Headmaster has a nervous breakdown, the future of the school is in jeopardy. With the help of a few good teachers - all committed in their very different ways – they set to turn round Waterloo Road, painful step by painful step.

Waterloo Road is in mourning after a fatal car crash that killed one of its pupils, Adam, and left another, Holly, in a coma. Donte and Chlo were also in the car and are both highly traumatized and plagued by guilt. The whole school blames them for Adam’s death and the playground banter is spiked with taunts of murder.

When heavily pregnant, fifteen year old Zoe steps onto the school bus for her first day deputy head, Andrew Treneman predicts trouble. Zoe is cocky, over-confident and boasts to all those who will listen how well she knows the Headmaster, Jack Rimmer. Later on she drops a bombshell that could ruin Jack’s career for good…

The pupils think it’s hilarious when they see a fluffy bunny climb onto the roof of Waterloo Road School. But Izzie is mortified to discover that it’s her unreliable ex husband, Jimmy with a serious message – he wants access to his kids and he’s not getting down until she agrees. Meanwhile, Andrew discovers a homework scam and makes Lewis Seddon scrub graffiti off the walls as punishment and Lorna visits the family planning clinc.

Even though her and Tom are officially separating, Lorna is surprisingly upbeat. She decides to change her whole image, and tells Izzie that it’s because she needs a fresh start – but is she secretly hoping that her sexy new outfits will rekindle Tom’s passion.

Headmaster, Jack Rimmer is panicking about the visit today by an LEA Inspector. However, he has taken some precautions, such as arranging a school trip to ensure that the worst teacher, Steph Haydock, and the most disruptive kids are well out of the Inspector’s way.

Jack, Andrew and Kim have organised an Open Day at Waterloo Road as a last ditch attempt to impress the LEA and keep the school open. Jack’s aware that there are any number of things that could go wrong – and he’s right to be worried! His problems start when Lewis tries to beat up Rory, an openly gay pupil.

It is the final day of reckoning for Waterloo Road as they await the decision of the LEA – will they close the school? Tensions are running very high, especially with Chlo and Donte due in court today.
